What is a DSP and What Does a DSP Do?
A Direct Support Professional (DSP) helps adults with disabilities lead self-directed lives, build life skills, and participate fully in their communities. DSPs provide support in daily activities, from personal care to meal planning, household management, and community outings, while also acting as advocates for the individuals they serve—helping communicate needs, goals, and self-expression.
Department: Residential Program
Reports To: Residential Director / QIDP Manager
Responsibilities
– Assist individuals with disabilities in leading self-directed lives
– Support activities of daily living and community participation
– Act as an advocate, promoting self-expression and personal goals
– Provide support at home, work, school, church, and other community spaces
Qualifications
– High School Diploma or GED
– Satisfactory Criminal Background Check
– Valid Driver’s License or State ID
Physical Demands
– Communicate effectively in English
– Walk, stand, and reach for extended periods
– Lift and move objects up to 50 pounds
– Climb stairs and perform essential job functions (reasonable accommodations may be made)
Job Duties
Residential Support
– Implement residential goals, assist with laundry, cleaning, cooking, and personal hygiene
– Plan and prepare meals following nutritional guidelines
– Assist with grocery shopping and household safety
– Transport residents to community events, appointments, and activities
– Support residents in self-administered medication programs
– Complete documentation, including incident reports, seizure records, and progress notes
– Maintain accurate records of specialized diets and safety practices
Quality and Dependability
– Perform work accurately and neatly while meeting deadlines
– Arrive on time and work independently as needed
– Follow all agency policies and procedures regarding safety, security, and confidentiality
Working Relationships
– Coordinate with day programs and other agencies to promote effective service delivery
– Treat clients and co-workers with dignity, respect, and courtesy
– Follow management directives and communicate effectively within the team
Training and Certification
– Participate in required staff training
– Maintain CPR and First Aid certification
